Listing Details

The King of Rock ‘N’ Roll, Elvis Presley, is presented is a 1960s-70s Elvis signed and inscribed postcard of the Garden of Allah swimming pool and environs on the grounds of the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. “The King” and Las Vegas are inextricably linked.  Elvis, hot on the heels of his ’56 national Number 1 hit of “Heartbreak Hotel”, and adored  by young fans, played Las Vegas for the first time on April 23, 1956, at The New Frontier Hotel and Casino, and to put it kindly, he bombed - atomically. The audience was an older group and not expecting Presley’s version of “rockabilly” music, and Elvis played a set of songs to mostly a silent crowd reaction.  One critic wrote that Presley’s performance was like, “A jug of corn liquor at a champagne party.” But Elvis was not deterred by the debacle. He said, “Man, I like Las Vegas. I’m going to go back there as soon as I can.” Of course, he did, over-and-over. Sometimes he stayed and performed at the Sahara Hotel in Vegas. And it got better. Much better. Until he was a Las Vegas idol. He filmed Viva Las Vegas, one of his more acclaimed movies, in Vegas in 1963, with Ann-Margret as his co-star. On May 1, 1967, Elvis married Pricilla Beaulieu (Presley) in Vegas, at the Aladdin Hotel. Eventually, from 1969-76, he wound up in part-time residence in Vegas, performing an amazing 636 consecutive sold-out shows at the International Hotel. He was a major movie star, in 30 films, and as of today, his records have sold over a billion copies. But the offered signed and inscribed postcard represents more than a link to Elvis Presley’s immense talent and cosmic fame. It can also represent a connection to a side of him not so well known – a side of Elvis as a humanitarian.

Elvis wasn’t only The King of Rock ‘N’ Roll; he was also the King of Generosity. He made annual Christmas donations to more than 50 organizations in Memphis, Tennessee – including St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, and the Salvation Army. He supported the Kui Lee Cancer Fund with his Aloha from Hawaii Concert, the first ever event televised worldwide on satellite TV. He gave greatly to the March of Dimes and the USS Arizona Memorial. He often gave anonymously, paying off numerous mortgages and bills, paying tuition for students, buying wheelchairs for those in need, giving toys to children and sending the teddy bears sent to him by fans to children’s hospitals, paying for medical operations to save sight or even lives. He befriended many, such as Gary Pepper, suffering from cerebral palsy, who received not only a state-of-the-art wheelchair, but also the payment of medical bills and plenty of time with Elvis, at his concerts and movies. Elvis was also known for often giving a poor or struggling person a free Cadillac. The offered signed and inscribed 3.4x8.2” postcard comes with a PSA/DNA LOA (Cert. #AI06978) for the signature. Elvis signed and inscribed the postcard in ink, in bold, clear, script as “Yours Elvis Presley”. The back of the postcard exhibits machine-printing, which reads, “Set like a royal jewel amid 20 acres of velvet lawn and blossoms, Las Vegas’ largest temperature controlled pool provides endless moments of relaxation and fun beneath the beautiful Nevada sun.” There is some paper loss on some of the edges and corners, some minor darkening and small, light stains, and 30+ pinholes, most likely from having this postcard pinned to bulletin boards or wall displays. One of the pinholes slightly impinges on the midpoint of the letter “E” in “Elvis” in the signature. Elvis Presley was unique, and the signed postcard is important for the humanity of the man who signed, as illustrated by this final anecdote: In the 1970s, when Presley was in Memphis, he liked to dress up in a policeman’s uniform to impersonate a police officer, and then, when “patrolling”, pull over motorists for reckless driving. Once he was recognized as Elvis, he would warn the motorist about driving safely, then give the driver both his autograph, and a lasting memory. There was only one Elvis, and this is his autograph. PSA DNA (full).
